چکیده

Agent-based simulations of pedestrian crowd behavior include a large number of agents, each of which typically decides its movement behavior in a time-based manner. Such a time-based approach makes it difficult to exploit the crowd system’s spatial and temporal heterogeneity resulting from agents’ non-uniform movements. This paper presents a discrete event approach for simulating pedestrian crowd. In the discrete event approach, an agent’s decision making is triggered by the “changes” of its external environment and/or its own internal states. This discrete event model naturally track the crowd system’s “activities” in both space and time, and represents a different way of agent modeling in virtual worlds. In this paper, we describe the discrete event agent model, present experiments results, and compare the performance between the discrete event approach and discrete time approach for different space resolutions.

Spatial activity-based modeling for pedestrian crowd simulation

This paper proposes a spatial activity-based modeling approach and applies it to pedestrian crowd behavior simulations. Compared to conventional pedestrian crowd models where pedestrians make movement decisions in a time-based manner, the spatial activity-based pedestrian crowd model allows a pedestrian to make decisions only when needed, that is, when there is significant change in the pedestr...

A Framework for Group Modeling in Agent-Based Pedestrian Crowd Simulations

Pedestrian crowd simulation explores crowd behaviors in virtual environments. It is extensively studied in many areas, such as safety and civil engineering, transportation, social science, entertainment industry and so on. As a common phenomenon in pedestrian crowds, grouping can play important roles in crowd behaviors. To achieve more realistic simulations, it is important to support group mod...

The impact of culture on crowd dynamics: an empirical approach

In agent-based social simulation, crowd models are used to generate agent behaviors that should correspond closely to human crowds. Despite significant progress in this area, many existing crowd models do not yet account for important cultural factors in crowd behavior, and even more so, for mixed-culture crowds. Moreover, evaluation of crowd models accounting for culture is particularly diffic...

Modeling group structures in pedestrian crowd simulation

Grouping is a common phenomenon in pedestrian crowds and plays important roles in affecting crowd behavior. Group modeling is still an open challenging problem and has not been incorporated by existing crowd simulation models. Motivated by the need of group modeling for crowd behavior simulation, this paper presents a unified and well-defined framework for modeling the structure aspect of diffe...

A Simple and Realistic Pedestrian Model for Crowd Simulation and Application

The simulation of pedestrian crowd that reflects reality is a major challenge for researches. Several crowd simulation models have been proposed such as cellular automata model, agent-based model, fluid dynamic model, etc. It is important to note that agent-based model is able, over others approaches, to provide a natural description of the system and then to capture complex human behaviors. In...
